Lovund boat museum

Lovund boat museum

In the summer of 2017, a 12 meter long archaeological boat from the 15th century, was discovered and excavated by archaeologists from the Tromsø Museum and the Norwegian Maritime Museum in the sand of Hamnholmen harbour, on the island of Lovund. By the great discovery, the island knew that they had to find a new home for the boat. VALRYGG studio has was assigned to design the new museum that will welcome visitors to explore the boat on the island where it was found.

Location: Lovund, Norway

Typology: Museum

Timeline: Built Project size: 330 sqm

Designed by VALRYGG studio

The museum founders wished to preserve the boat that was found in the depth of the sea. We created a a visitor center were you can see the boat in its natural environment, with a structure that tells a story about the past and the present. The shape of the building takes inspiration from the fish drying racks which are commonly found along the northern coast of Norway. The steel A-frame shape is lifting the building above sea level, creating a monumental and welcoming impression for visitors to explore the picturesque islands of the Norwegian Arctic Circle.
